Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute

The Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) is a parastatal in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD). The Institute is being supervised by the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN). Established in 1948 as West African Stored Products Research Unit (WASPRU) during the colonial era, the Institute’s primary responsibility was to assess the quality of exportable crops from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Gambia to the United Kingdom. It became Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute after the independence in 1960. As the only Postharvest research institute in the country, NSPRI contributes to national and regional food security through its mandate of improving bulk storage of agricultural commodities, crop value addition and safe handling of crops and products from farm to fork to reduce postharvest losses.

The Vision of the Institute is to be a leading provider of Agricultural Postharvest Solution in Nigeria and West African Sub-region while the Mission is to Reducing Postharvest losses by ensuring the quality, safety and availability of Agricultural Produce.

The Institute is saddled with the responsibility of conducting research into the postharvest handling problems of agricultural commodities and fabricate pilot scale postharvest handling equipment. NSPRI shall disseminate results of research through appropriate extension methods to improve competence and skills of farmers, agro-processors, produce handlers and inspectors. It shall also in collaboration with other agencies, develop standards for marketing of agricultural commodities.

The Institute achieves these by working closely with its Stakeholders- Smallholder Farmers, Processors, Traders, and Exporters through capacity building on best practices and creating enabling environment to reduce agricultural post-harvest losses sustainably.

Nutrition Society of Nigeria

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) is a professional, non-governmental association that has been dedicated to the advancement of nutrition, public health, and development in Nigeria since 1963 by promoting research, learning, and collaboration with multisectoral stakeholders. It is the largest gathering of stakeholders in Nutrition in Nigeria.

The vision of the NSN, as documented in its Strategic Workplan for 2022 – 2026, is to promote sound research and learning; build skills, competencies, and capacity; enhance and improve professionalism; collaborate with relevant government MDAs, development partners and private sector foundations or corporate foundations; create awareness through high-level advocacy; and create an enabling environment that fosters innovations and entrepreneurship to create disruptive market solutions through information on and exposure to accessible grants, research outputs, and industry collaborations.

This vision of the NSN is in synergy with those of the Grand Challenges family of initiatives. In 2023, NSN raised initial funding from the Gates Foundation to establish the Grand Challenges Nigeria (GCNg) project secretariat as a national initiative focused on catalysing and funding a groundswell of locally driven innovations to address complex health and development issues across Nigeria. As a lead organization for the GCNg initiative, NSN will work to build a strong coalition to drive a successful national initiative, by mobilizing government and cross-sectoral partnerships, networks, expertise, and experience towards achieving its goals.

Starting from 2016, Alive & Thrive has supported the Government of Nigeria in improving the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women, infants, and young children. Our efforts have focused on strengthening the capacity of local governments and community-based organizations in seven states to implement nutrition programs. Currently, Alive & Thrive is working to scale up multiple micronutrient supplementation for pregnant and lactating women through advocacy, social and behavior change interventions, community engagement, and system strengthening. Our ongoing technical assistance and locally-tailored guidance aim to:

  • Increase uptake and adherence to multiple micronutrient supplementation through social and behavior change and community engagement strategies.
  • Support the Government of Nigeria in developing policies and guidelines for scaling up multiple micronutrient supplementation.
  • Measure progress over time by including new indicators in the National Health Management Information System.
  • Assist the Government of Nigeria in conducting and analyzing data from assessments of the environment for the rollout of multiple micronutrient supplements in 18 states.
  • Help the Government of Nigeria develop training manuals and job aids to build the capacity and skills of frontline health workers to implement MIYCN and MMS at scale, while strengthening community engagement strategies.

Driven by data and results, Alive & Thrive aims to transfer knowledge so that others can adopt, adapt, and sustain policies and programs that improve nutrition for women, children, and adolescents.
